MKS Toolkit Product Overview
All the tools of the trade for professional programmers, application
developers, and engineers
What is MKS Toolkit?
-
- MKS Toolkit is a powerful set of software tools designed to
make computing tasks quick and easy on your PC. Many of these
utilities were once only available on UNIX systems. But now, MKS
has made them available for all the contemporary operating systems,
including DOS/Windows, OS/2, and Windows NT. MKS Toolkit adds
more than 190 new commands to your software repertoire, including
a kornshell, vi, awk, awkc, grep, uucp, and many other valuable
utilities. These commands can be linked together to create even
more powerful operations.
Powerful Desktop Tools
-
- MKS Toolkit offers a variety of essential desktop tools which
perform important daily functions such as moving and copying directories,
word counts, sorts, spell checking, file type recognition, and
basic calculations. One of the most powerful features in MKS Toolkit
is the KornShell command interpreter. While providing all systems
with the same look and feel, the KornShell still allows you to
run all of your existing DOS, OS/2, or NT applications. The KornShell
enables you to edit and re-execute previously used commands, saving
time on those repetitive jobs. You can also define aliases for
commonly used commands or abbreviations for commonly used strings,
and create loops and functions. Add the KornShell's capability
of accepting command line input up to 8192 characters, compared
to just 127 on DOS, and you start to get an idea of why the MKS
KornShell is so popular with PC users.
Editing Tools
-
- MKS Toolkit offers a variety of editing tools such as a stream
line editor, command line editor, full screen editor, and translation
filter. The Vi full screen editor makes it possible to interactively
edit text files up to 65,000 lines. Vi offers both a command line
interface and a graphical user interface. Vi for Windows is a
complete menu-driven Windows application with fully functional
scroll bars, font selections, mouse support, and sizeable windows.
Dialog boxes are provided to open files, set Vi options, and enter
macros. Dare to Compare with Vdiff Instantly view differences
between two text files with the Visual Diff utility for Windows.
Visual Diff provides a side-by-side comparison of two text files,
displaying color coded differences. You determine the colors used
to indicate lines of text that have been changed, added, or deleted.
Transfer Data Between DOS, OS/2, NT and UNIX
-
- Transferring data between operating systems has always posed
a problem due to the incompatibility of file systems. MKS Toolkit's
file transfer utilities make it easy to move data between DOS,
OS/2, NT, and UNIX whether you are using disks or tape. By using
one of the data transfer tools such as tar, mt, cpio, dd and pax,
you can transfer files onto a floppy disk and take that disk directly
to a UNIX system to be read. The same applies to reading a UNIX
floppy on your DOS, OS/2, or NT PC. Data is now completely transportable
between operating systems.

"Whether you're a programmer, administrator or power user,
the MKS Toolkit turns Windows NT into a world-class operating
system with a world-class set of commands and utilities. I wouldn't
run without it." - Unixworld's Open Computing, July 1994
"MKS Toolkit for DOS really helped me to get my
work done
instead of wasting time trying to figure out how to do certain
things in the DOS fashion. I just installed MKS Toolkit for OS/2
and equally love it. It gives me a platform-independent stepping
stone to work in new environments without allowing me to lose
my edge over operating system basics." - Dave Holcomb, RDO
Software, Orem, UT, USA.
